Wrinkles 101
If you are reading this right now, we are 100% confident you have some type of wrinkles on your face. If you don’t, you might be a toddler genius or, possibly someone who has never blinked or laughed. We all have wrinkles because we all have facial muscles. The muscles are hard at work keeping us full of expressions! Sure, sun damage, smoking, and natural aging can expedite the wrinkle train. Unfortunatley, the train will pull into the station at some point and leave you some cumbersome creases on its journey.
Before you can solve a problem, you have to understand it, right? Let’s take a moment to dive into different types of wrinkles, their definitions, their causes, and what we can do to help prevent and treat those unwanted creases. While some of the wrinkles we will describe are unpreventable or untreatable, the vast majority of facial creases can be solved!
The 2 main types of wrinkles are:
Dynamic Wrinkles:
These develop from repeated movements of the facial muscles.
Static Wrinkles:
These wrinkles are a result of loss of elasticity and the takeover of gravity.
Dynamic wrinkles can become static wrinkles over time. For example, fine smile lines morph into more prominent nasolabial folds. More commonly known as ‘smile or laugh lines,’ these folds run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth.
All of the subsequent types of wrinkles below do fit into the 2 categories named above.
Expression Wrinkles:
Facial muscles differ in many ways from other muscles in the body; one difference is that they attach directly to the skin, therefore allowing us the ability to form expressions. Crow’s feet and frown lines are common Expressions of Wrinkles. Unpreventable, for most, unless being an expressionless void of a human sounds up your alley… Botox is the best solution for Expression Wrinkles.
Elastotic Wrinkles:
Caused by loss of elastic structure within the skin, primarily due to repeated sun exposure. Crease lines are mostly on cheeks, upper lips, and the base of your neck, and they become more permanent over time. Good skincare regimens, including unbending sunscreen usage, are the best preventative measures.
Gravitational Wrinkles:
The name is self-explanatory… we are being pushed down into the center of the earth! Mother Nature’s wrath of trying to keep our feet firmly planted is to blame for the deepening or worsening of already deflated skin. Gravity can, over time, make the nasolabial folds more prominent. Re-inflating the area using commercially available fillers is the best solution to combat gravitational wrinkles.
Compression Wrinkles:
The latest grouping/definition of wrinkles, compression wrinkles are formed when face squishing occurs in relationship to a pillow. Preventing these cuddly creases involved becoming a back sleeper or using a pillow specially designed to alleviate pressure from your skin.
Atrophic Wrinkles:
Caused by a loss of collagen structure and thinning of the skin, Atrophic wrinkles, are the parallel line wrinkles that appear on your forehead. It’s widely accepted that these wrinkles are caused by sun damage as well as other factors, such as the overuse of steroid creams. While difficult to treat, Atrophic Wrinkles can be prevented with a hydrating skincare regimen.
