What are neurotoxins and how do they work?
It is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. This is a toxin that blocks nerve activity in muscles that temporarily causes a reduction in muscle activity.
What is the difference between neurotoxins and dermal fillers?
Neurotoxins are uses to soften and reduce wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyes (angry 11’s), crows feet, lips, and chin areas- these injections can last up to 3-4 months – the effects of neurotoxins are seen within 3-7 days depending on which product your provider uses.
Dermal fillers are used to lift the deep lines around the smile lines, soft smoker lines around the lips, create fuller lips, define cheeks and can create a sharper jaw line. Dermal fillers can last up to 6-18 months depending on the area injected.
Do the injections hurt?
Neurotoxin injections feel like a minor bee sting.
Dermal fillers are typically infused with lidocaine (numbing agent) to lessen the injection pain, topical anesthetic is also used in some cases.
What are the side effects of neurotoxins?
Possible bruising at the site of injection
Rare but reported Headaches, eyelid sagging, diarrhea, dry eye, dry mouth, visual impairment, shortness of breath
Who is not a candidate for neurotoxins for cosmetic use?
Anyone with a neuromuscular disorders such as ALS Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome. Individuals who are pregnant or nursing should not receive injections of neurotoxins.
How long do the procedures take?
For new clients – total time for neurotoxin injections – 30 mins (initial consultation, consent form)
Established clients – 5-10 mins
For new clients for dermal fillers- 45 mins to one hour (initial consultation, consent form)
Established clients – 30-45 mins
What to do before and after my appointment?
Before: we recommend not taking any NSAID medications (ibuprofen, naproxen), as you may be more likely to bruise after treatment
No need to come with a freshly washed face. We will throughly clean the area with alcohol before the treatment
After: no exercising the same day as the procedure. You may the next day.
Don’t rub the areas where neurotoxin is injected. It’s best not to lay flat four hours after neurotoxin is injected. You will have tiny bumps and local redness to the injection site that subside within 1-2 hours. You may wear makeup after injections
Fillers: no exercising the day of the injection. Expect some swelling for 2-3 days and possible bruising that subsides within a week
