One word: Sunscreen
There! We did it… we summed up all you need to know about taking care of your body’s most vulnerable organ: your skin! We can not stress enough the importance of wearing a broad-spectrum SPF on all parts of your skin when you step out into the beautiful spring and summer sunshine… not only will it reduce cosmetic blunders such as wrinkles and general loss of elasticity, but it can save your life from deadly cancers caused by UV rays.
So, let’s dive a little deeper than just the word ‘sunscreen!’ because, after all, we aren’t your mother as your teenage self is leaving the house to go roast in the sunshine. Taking care of your skin in the summer requires a more holistic approach and an attention to detail regarding your skin care behaviors as we all try to woo Mr. Sun this summer.
You need to lighten your load! The heat and humidity of the summer means you can swap out heavier cleansers and creams for more light-weight and dual purpose options. A lightweight moisturizer with a SPF of 30 or higher is a great option for everyday wear! There are tinted options that can take the place of heavy foundations as well, avoiding clogged pores and the unwanted look of a melting face. Especially if you have oily skin, or are acne-prone, losing the layers this summer can help clear up potential problems!
Continue to moisturize your skin after cleansing. Sweat and pool water don’t count as effective moisturizers, in fact, they do just the opposite! Moisturizers reestablish the outermost layer of your skin which protects pollutants and chemicals from irritating and causing dryness. Again, that combination moisturizer and SPF is a home run for summer skin care.
Over-showering, or showering in water that is too hot can lead to dryness and a ‘tight’ feeling to your skin. Many of us shower more than once a day in the summer… turn down the water temperature and don’t linger too long. Consider ways you can feel clean without taking a full-shower or bath to cut down on your skin’s exposure to constant hot water.
Stay in the shade, and drink plenty of water. Hydration is essential for our skin 365 days a year, but especially in the summer when our body is working overtime to stay cool. While you drink your 8 glasses a day, you also should be staying in the shade as much as possible and avoiding the hottest, most intense, midday sun.
And lastly… what was that one word we used at the beginning? Oh yes, SUNSCREEN!
A broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on all exposed skin is essential. Buy enough for all of the places in your life that you might need a quick reapplication: purse, car console, beach bag, gym bag, office desk… Buying one bottle and keeping it by your bathroom sink is never enough. Use technology to help remind you when it is time to reapply (set an alarm on your phone!)
